GBSAN Bushcare Group Activities

Our Bushcare Group is now coordinated by Andrew Pengelly. Andrew has extensive knowledge and experience with plant identification, management of plantings and weed management as well as medicinal and food uses of native plants and weeds. In April, Andrew organised our Bushcare group to assist the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium in managing weed invasion of the critically endangered Black Grevillea. Members of the group were pleasantly surprised to see the growth of the plants and how well they are thriving.

A fine April Wednesday saw GBSAN Bushcare group spread out along the verges of Thulimbah School Road, attacking the grassy weeds that are threatening to overcome the critically endangered black Grevillea (G. scortechini) that has made a home here. Happily the Grevilleas seem to be thriving despite the dry weather that is causing stress to many other native plants at the moment. Hopefully our efforts will help to ensure this rare species keeps ahead of the competing weeds.

May's project is centered at Heritage Park at the southern end of Stanthorpe along Quart Pot Creek. We are attacking environmental weeds such as privet, blackberry and honeysuckle that are impacting on the native flora at this beautiful and historic site. This month we will have assistance from SDRC Parks and Gardens who will bring a couple of chainsaw operators to help remove the target privet trees. We are meeting at Heritage Park at 8am, Wednesday 20th May. Please RSVP if you plan to come along

If you are interested in bushcare, need assistance with planting or weed management, or would like to join the group, please reach out to Andrew at trueunicorn11@gmail.com
