Protecting Biodiversity

Connecting habitats. Restoring landscapes. Conserving wildlife for future generations.

GBSAN works with communities, landholders, volunteers, and government agencies to protect the unique biodiversity of the Granite Belt and Southern Downs region. Through habitat restoration, conservation partnerships, and community action, we are helping native plants and wildlife thrive.

Together we can create connected landscapes, protect native wildlife, and build a healthier future for biodiversity.

🌿 Landscape Linkages

Creating connections between fragmented habitats is essential for wildlife movement and ecosystem resilience.

GBSAN's Landscape Linkages program works with landholders to establish wildlife corridors, restore native vegetation, and reconnect isolated bushland areas. These linkages allow birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects to move safely across the landscape while improving ecosystem health.

🐾 Cat Management

Protecting wildlife, neighbours and cat welfare through responsible cat ownership.

Free-ranging domestic and feral cats pose a significant threat to native wildlife. GBSAN supports community education and practical initiatives that encourage responsible pet ownership, including containment, desexing, identification, and effective management strategies that reduce impacts on native species.

🌱 GBSAN Bushcare Group

Local volunteers making a tangible difference.

The GBSAN Bushcare Group undertakes practical conservation activities including weed control, revegetation, habitat restoration, and monitoring of native flora and fauna. Regular working bees provide opportunities for community members to contribute directly to protecting local biodiversity.

🌳 Upgrading State Forests to Conservation Parks

Securing long-term protection for critical habitats.

GBSAN advocates for the transition of environmentally significant State Forest areas to National Park and Conservation Park status where appropriate. Enhanced protection helps safeguard threatened species, preserve important ecosystems, and ensure these natural areas remain protected and well managed for future generations.

🐀 Rodenticides

Safer rodent control

GBSAN’s Wildlife Friendly Granite Belt campaign advocates for the safer use of rodent control measures that minimises impacts on non-target species such as owls, reptiles and mammals as well as domestic pets.

🦋 Friends of Broadwater

Protecting one of the region's most important natural assets.

Friends of Broadwater State Forest brings together community members dedicated to conserving the ecological values of the Broadwater area. Activities include habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, environmental education, and advocacy for the protection of this significant wetland and woodland ecosystem.

🐝Bug Space Gardeners Network

Protecting the small creatures that keep ecosystems functioning.

Insects are the foundation of healthy ecosystems, providing pollination, nutrient cycling, pest control, and food for countless native species. GBSAN promotes the conservation of native bees, butterflies, beetles, moths, and other beneficial insects through habitat restoration, citizen science, research partnerships, and community education.

By increasing native flowering plants and protecting critical insect habitat, we can help sustain the biodiversity that supports our landscapes and agricultural systems.
