Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe celebrates 10 years

Boomerang Bags Stanthorpe recently celebrated 10 years of turning reclaimed fabric into reusable bags. In that time, volunteers have made more than 17,000 bags, with most distributed locally through businesses, community groups and charities.

Did you know?

• Almost every local primary school student has received a free library bag at some point.

• The group make Mum & Bubs bags for the town’s newest arrivals, as well as drainage bags for mastectomy patients, distributed through Zonta.

• The most common bags are modelled on the old grey plastic shopping bags.

• Handle lengths vary from short to long. It all depends on the fabric available.

• They make casket liners for cardboard caskets for local funeral operator Rest Funerals.

• Volunteers sew, sort, cut or iron and can drop in anytime between 9am and 2pm on Tuesdays, with no set hours or expectation to stay for the whole day.

• The permanent sewing centre is actually the large ‘supper room’ at the back of The Summit Hall. The room was once a place where hall patrons relaxed and caught up after a dance. 

Bags start from just $2.50 and are available at various local shops. For something a little fancier, fully lined ‘statement bags’ are available right here at the art gallery.
