H5 bird flu in Queensland

Queensland recorded it’s first case of Bird Flu dead petrel found on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) was confirmed positive for H5 bird flu on 25 July 2026, in laboratory tests by the CSIRO Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.

We can all play a role in surveillance for H5 bird flu. If you see sick or dead wild birds or wildlife, remember:

• Avoid contact.

• Record what you observe.

• Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

As of 3pm AEST, 3 August 2026, Australia has 78 confirmed detections of H5 bird flu in wild seabirds.

• 10 in Western Australia (WA)

• 58 in South Australia (SA) 

• 2 in New South Wales (NSW)

• 1 in Queensland (QLD)

• 7 in Victoria (VIC).
