Documentary Screening Invitation - Saving One of Australia's Rarest Butterflies
Natura Pacific is inviting people to a free screening in Toowoomba on Friday 4 September from 1 - 3pm of their latest documentary Back from the Brink – Bull Oak Jewel Butterfly, which tells the story of one of Australia’s rarest butterflies and the conservation work underway to better understand and protect it.
This butterfly occurs in bull oaks out near Leyburn and Goondiwindi but tree clearing has greatly restricted tree numbers. It has a fascinating symbiotic relationship with an ant species that protects and nurtures its caterpillars. In return, the ants feed on a sugary secretion produced by the caterpillars.
The screening will include the documentary followed by discussion with Professor Roger Kitching and Dr Don Sands, who bring extensive ecological and entomological expertise to the project.
