Water Matters: Understanding Our Regional Water Budget
Water security continues to be a critical issue for our Granite Belt community, and we're pleased to see it receiving renewed attention from the State Government. We remain hopeful that this renewed focus will lead to well-informed decisions that address our community's ongoing vulnerability to water shortages.

Making Sense of Our Water Resources
Our GBSAN water team has been working hard to develop a clearer picture of how water flows through our region. We've created the concept of a regional water budget – think of it as a balance sheet for our most precious natural resource.
The diagram below provides a simplified illustration of the Granite Belt water equation. The severe 2019/20 drought taught us an important lesson: the Granite Belt doesn't have a water overdraft facility. When our water account runs dry, there are no emergency reserves to tap into.

Three Pillars of Water Security
Our message is simple but vital: Finite Supply, Shared Responsibility, Sustainable Future. Together, we can build a more water-secure future for the Granite Belt.
GBSAN advocates for a community-developed water security strategy that involves all stakeholders. We've created a short video presentation that breaks down the essential building blocks of water security in easy-to-understand terms. [Watch the video here].
