Introducing New GBSAN Recycling Volunteers
Pictured here at the recycling facility at the WhistleStop Community Garden are new volunteers Lyn, Terry and Catherine with Kath Ives, convenor of Happy Chat and newly-elected President of Stanthorpe Training Centre Inc., which auspices the community gardens.
GBSAN's Waste and Resource Recovery Working Group strives to increase and improve recycling within our local community. They are currently working with Council and other organisations to expand the range of recycling options locally. GBSAN volunteers Lyn Rowley, Terry Pinney and Catherine Arden have formed a new recycling team to continue with, and hopefully expand on, projects originated by local community member Elaine, and Phillipa and Sancha from GBSAN, at the WhistleStop Heritage and Community Gardens.
Recycling facilities currently available include Terracycle bins for hair care product containers, clean cling wrap and zip lock bags, and coffee pods. Catherine and Lyn also do a monthly circuit of selected hair salons in Stanthorpe to pick up hair care product containers that the salons have collected. Together with Terry, they then sort and package these items and dispatch them to Terracycle or, in the case of selected coffee pods, package them up to be collected by Nespresso. Recycling Rewards earned from Terracycle are currently donated to local charity HappyChat.
There are also bins for (clean and dry) plastic bottle caps with recycling symbols 2 and 4. These are sorted, boxed and delivered to Resitech at Wacol, where they are melted down to make slip sheets, root barrier guards and damp course, among other products.
Eligible containers and bottles can be deposited in a dedicated Containers for Change bin for transporting to the Containers for Change facility at the Industrial Estate, with the 10c refunds again donated to local charity Happy Chat.
