Boomerang Alliance Needs YOU!
Australia is the second-largest consumer of single-use plastic packaging in the world, and we only recycle 18% of it. Add to this the fact that 1.6 billion single-use cups are landfilled or littered in Australia each year, and it's easy to see that we have a looming plastic crisis in this country. The Boomerang Alliance has a vision to embrace recyclables and reduce waste and plastic pollution. Started in 2003 when a group of passionate people campaigned for a container deposit scheme, Boomerang Alliance has grown quickly and now comprises 55 national, state and local allies. GBSAN is one of those allies.
With 85% of Australians concerned about plastic pollution, it's time for real packaging reform in Australia, and you can help by signing the petition. Boomerang Alliance is pushing to stop plastic pollution and solve the packaging issue by lobbying for an extended producer responsibility scheme to require producers to fund the collection and recovery of their packaging, by fast-tracking a national soft plastics collection scheme and by introducing tougher regulations for problem plastics and single-use plastic items.
On a personal level, there are plenty of individual actions you can take to reduce plastic packaging at a household level. You could make just one small commitment to replace take-away coffee cups by bringing your own keep cup. Or you could use a fabric produce bag rather than a plastic one at the supermarket. Thanks for taking action.
